‘God’s Works ’

Tuesday, June 20, 2006 Mr. C. Pat Lanyon

Review: God’s holiness is His separateness from all aspects of His creation as illustrated by Light and Darkness. He is [to be] set apart, especially when being worshiped. (Character Attribute #14C Holiness) 1 John 1.5

From the Prayer Notebook:

PS 100.4; HE 11.6 1 Thess 5.17-18

2B. WHAT YOU DO – You give me . (God's ACTIVITY)

Psalm 100:4

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.

Hebrews 11:6

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

1 Thessalonians 5:17-18

pray without ceasing, [18] in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Explanatory Comments:

Since pleasing God requires faith in 1) Who "He is" and faith that 2) "He is a rewarder," we begin the next minor subsection of the Adoration Prayer Principle (1A) we call God’s activity. We see also that recognizing that He does reward is done principally through the act of giving thanks.

Two main sub-sub-points are covered in our outline: Thanksgiving for 1) Spiritual (Eternal) Blessings, and for 2) Earthly (Temporal) Blessings. Psalm 100 teaches us that taking time and doing this very activity is a means of entering His gates – a picture of entering His kingdom, or His presence, the place where we go to worship Him. We know this to be prayer – our means to communication with Him. 1 Thessalonians 5:17-18 teaches also that this is God’s will for us (see prayer principle 3A) and while pleasant things God does for us are easily acknowledged the unpleasant works of God must also be received with thanksgiving:

Psalm 119:75 I know, O LORD, that Your judgments are right, And that in faithfulness You have afflicted me. [92] Unless Your law had been my delight, I would then have perished in my affliction. [67] Before I was afflicted I went astray, But now I keep Your word. [71] It is good for me that I have been afflicted, That I may learn Your statutes. Continued On Page 2

God enables His servant to do His will (3A,2E below as well). Affliction 1)v.75 is good for me; 2)v.92 will cause me to perish if I do not delight in them; 3)v. 67, keeps me from going astray!; 4)v. 71, causes me to learn God law, 5)reveals whether or not I keep God law .(see 4D below) So Cry out (in prayer) to God for help in failure to attain God’s expectations in life.

Psalm 138:3,8 In the day when I cried out, You answered me, And made me bold with strength in my soul. [8] The LORD will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O LORD, endures forever; Do not forsake the works of Your hands.

It is noteworthy to realize God’s Works (as identified by that which is eternal in nature) are to receive a special emphasis:

Colossians 3. 1-4 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. nkjv [The things above point to that which is eternal.]

Heb 13:15 Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. nkjv

As you do this you will begin to realize the greatness of God’s works before time began that we receive as believers. Some of these subjects we will cover will be: 1) Salvation by God’s Grace, 2) Revelation by God of His Self, Will, Call, Word, 3)Preparation for Service to Him, 4)Character-Proving Tests, 5)Leadership 6)Friendship 7)Privilege 8)Inheritance.

Applications (1C. For Spiritual Blessings) "You give me ." (God's ACTIVITY)

  • 1. Salvation of Soul. Take time to be especially thankful that you have become a Christian, and that you know that it is true, and that you can know for sure about your salvation.
  • 2. Revelation of God. Thank God that He has, in truth, revealed Himself to us, and that that revelation has included more: It includes knowing His will, and understanding that He has a plan in mind for your life, and that He actually calls men to special service for His works on earth which they can know. Most of all we can know His recorded word, the Bible.
  • 3. Preparation for His Service. See the top of this page. PSALM 119.75; PSALM 138.3,8; PHILIPPIANS 1.7
  • 4. Testing of God for that Service. DT 8.2; EX 20.20 Israel was tested by God after the Red Sea, we will also be tested in the Christian Life. 2CORINTHIANS 5:10
  • 5. Leadership Enablement. JOSHUA 3.7 Joshua’s call was to replace Moses!
  • 6. Friendship With God. 1 JOHN 1.7,3 We do have actual fellowship with Almighty God!
  • 7. Privilege to Serve the Almighty God. MATTHEW 5.16; ROMANS 15.6
  • 8. Inheritance from God is assured to Believers. COLOSSIANS 3.24, 1.12; ROMANS 8.17
