Prayer Prin. 3A: Sub.-Giving Thanks ...Father: C. Pat Lanyon

Review: Last time we studied the longsuffering with joy we are to exhibit in the midst of doing God’s will and praying for it to be done. We learned 1)God shows it to lead us to salvation; 2)That believers including Paul, the Hebrews Author, James, and Peter "prayed for, commanded, and showed it toward others." 3)We learned that it was given that we might show it to others as a ‘pattern’ or a regular behavior we practice while doing God’s Will.

Colossians 1:9-12 (with outline sectional marking as we are seeking to understand it)

9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that (1B.) you may be filled with the knowledge of His will (1c.) in all wisdom and (2c.) spiritual understanding;

10 that you may 2B. walk worthy of the Lord, (1c1d.) fully pleasing Him, (1c2d.) being fruitful in every good work and (1c3d.) increasing in the knowledge of God;

11 (1c4d.) strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for (1c5d.) all patience and (1c6d.) longsuffering with joy;

12 (1c7d) giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.

Introduction:

There are many, many passages that encourage us to be thankful, but we would like to limit ourselves to the context of prayer for God’s will and being thankful to the Father for the sake of this Colossians passages. Therefore we first look at similar passages in the same book:

Col 2:2 that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ,

Col 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. [16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.]

Col 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

These verses teach us that the whole idea of doing God’s will includes first being a qualified partaker of actual Christian living. It results in a full understanding of what we all freely admit as being a ‘mystery of God’ which in turn shows a growing understanding of both the Father and also the Son. The end is a peacefulness that controls our heart. There is a unity involved since we are "called into one body." This calling has instructions coming through "psalms, hymns and spiritual songs" – all of which teach doctrine through God’s Word. Works done which are God’s will are done through Jesus, God’s Son toward the Father in an atmosphere of thanksgiving! And there is an obvious focus on the Father, as can be seen in Colossians above, and also here:

Joh 4:23 "But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.

Joh 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Joh 20:17 Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, `I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.'"

1Co 8:6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.

Eph 4:6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Jas 3:9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God.

1Jo 1:3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.

These verses emphasize the importance of keeping our focus on the Father as we seek to do God’s will.

The inheritance of the saints. We have studied this before under the Adoration section, but the following verses are good to study for a deeper understanding.

Ro 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Ro 8:30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

Ro 9:23 and that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory,

2Co 5:5; Tit 2:14; Re 22:14

Ro 11:17 And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree,

Ro 15:27 It pleased them indeed, and they are their debtors. For if the Gentiles have been partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister to them in material things.

1Co 9:23; Eph 3:6; Heb 3:1; Heb 3:14; 1Pe 5:1; 1Jo 3:1-3

In the light. Consider the symbolic object light in the context of our study of God’s Will:

Ps 36:9 For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.

Ps 97:11 Light is sown for the righteous, And gladness for the upright in heart.

Pr 4:18 But the path of the just is like the shining sun, That shines ever brighter unto the perfect day.

Isa 60:19-20 "The sun shall no longer be your light by day, Nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you; But the LORD will be to you an everlasting light, And your God your glory. 20 Your sun shall no longer go down, Nor shall your moon withdraw itself; For the LORD will be your everlasting light, And the days of your mourning shall be ended.

Heb 12:23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect,

Re 21:23 The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.

Re 22:5 There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.
