Text (from Scan, then edited)
Twenty-nine pounds
were found of the boy and little Beth was left
to bleed to death with one leg amputated-yet
she wouldn't die. Let's let Beth tell the story.
"I started on drugs when I was about ten
and then I started listening to rock music. At
first it was just soft rock, and then my life
started revolving around it and it got harder
and harder. Then I started listening to the
words and doing what they told me and I
started on drugs and smoking and living in
immorality.
August 2 was my birthday and I had just
turned fourteen. On August 21 I ran away with
a young man seventeen. We were on drugs and
living in sin. We had been gone for three days
and had broken into a woman's house and
stolen her car. I just remember that we were
walking and the next thing I remember was
waking up and seeing the lights of a train com-
ing toward me and realizing that I had gotten
hit by a train and that the second train was
coming toward me. I rolled off the railroad track
and lay there from 12:00 midnight until 4:00 in
the morning. Some men heard my screams and
they came and got me. They rushed me to the
hospital and I was there for three months. The
boy had been killed instantly and one of my legs
had been cut off by the train.
When I got my new leg and went home my
life didn't change. My parents loved me and
prayed for me, but it didn't matter. I didn't
care about them and my heart was bitter against
God and I hated God and I hated my family.
My life at home was just a nightmare. I ran
away again and was sleeping on the streets and
any place I could find. I would sleep on the
beach. I went to a half-way house and was there
for two weeks. My parents came and got me
and brought me to the Bethesda Home in Mis-
sissippi and I also rebelled there. I hated it there
and I hated the girls when they prayed for me
that the Lord would save me. But finally the
Lord burdened my heart and He brought me to
my knees and He saved my soul and since then
my life has changed. He has given me a new
desire and a new song in my mouth to sing
praises unto Him. I just love the Lord so much
and I want to serve Him all my life. The peace
and joy I was searching for, I never found
through drugs or through rock music; it was
after I got saved that I found the real joy and
the real peace and the real happiness I had been
searching for all my life. I just love the Lord and
I want to serve Him all my life. He IS the
answer."
Strange as it may seem, she went back to
the same life. She had a new leg and foot and
had learned to walk again, but not where to
walk. Margaret Slattery took a little crippled
boy many years ago and, through a series of
operations and physical therapy, helped the
little fellow to walk. He turned out to be a crimi-
nal and she said in sorrow, "I taught him to
walk, but not where to walk." Little Beth went
back to the same life of sin and through a dear
preacher her mother and dad brought her to our
Bethesda Horne for Girls where she had another
operation, a heart transplant-yes, Jesus saved
her. "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is
a new creature: old things are passed away;
behold, all things are become new." II Corin-
thians 5:17. She came from the Amtrak of night
to the I AM track of light.
This is the "Do it yourself" day, but salva-
tion is not "Do," it's "Done." Jesus said, "It is
finished," as He hung on that old bloody cross.
The Bible says " ... the works were finished
from the foundation of the world." Hebrews
4:3. "Not by works of righteousness which we
have done, but according to his mercy he saved
us, by the washing of regeneration, and renew-
ing of the Holy Ghost." Titus 3:5. "For by grace
are ye saved through faith; and that not of your-
selves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest
any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8,9. All
that you need is Christ.
The greatest name in the Bible for Jesus is
"I AM." Moses in the Old Testament met the
"I AM" at the burning bush and in His au-
thority led over three million Israelites out of
Egyptian bondage across the Red Sea dry shod
and through the wilderness unharmed and into
the Promised Land. That same I AM-the Lord
Jesus Christ is just the same today. In John 14
Jesus speaks to this troubled world, "Let not
your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, be-
lieve also in me. In my Father's hous arc many
mansions: if it were not so, I would have told
you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I
go and prepare a place for you, I will come
again, and receive you unto myself; that where
I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go
ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith
unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou
goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus
saith unto him, "I AM the way, the truth,
and the life: NO MAN COMETH UNTO THE .
FATHER but by me." He is not "a way," but
"THE WAY."
A big hotel was burning. The halls and
stairways were full of smoke and flames. A
man on the fourth floor was facing a flaming
death when a big ladder appeared at his win-
dow with a brave fireman on the ladder urging
the man to come with him. The man had tried
every other way, but he found out that the fire-
man was the ONLY way, and to safety he went
down the ladder. "There is one God and on'
mediator between God and men, the man
Christ Jesus." I Peter 2:5. It i not the Pop' or
the priest or the Virgin Mary or the Baptist
church or baptism or good works-it is JESUS.
Since He is THE way, He is the way to go. He
is THE truth and all you need to know. He is
THE life and that is the way we are to live. "I
am come that they might have life, and that they
might have it more abundantly." John 10:10.
Jesus said "I am THE door"-not a door. There
was one door in the ark and only one. Jesus said
"I AM the light" and "I AM the resurrection."
While Jesus was here, He demonstrated His
power to resurrect a man by the name of Laza-
rus and a little boy and a little girl and a woman.
His resurrection power was thoroughly proved.
He said, "I AM the Alpha." That is the first
letter of the alphabet. "I AM the Omega." That
is the last letter of the alphabet. The writer of
Hebrews said, "God in these last days has
spoken unto us through His Son." Jesus is
God's sign language that becomes our Saviour.
He said "I AM the beginning." Nobody ever
begins to live until they know Christ. He said
"I AM the end," and he takes the fear out of
death for the believer. He is the I AM in the
healing department-"I AM the Lord that
healeth thee."
Is there something missing in your life? It
is Christ, because the Word of God says you
are complete IN Him. "IN Him dwelleth ALL."
It is not wife-trouble or home-trouble or children
-trouble or head-trouble you are having, it is sin-
trouble. You can't buy peace. It is a gift. "My
peace I give unto you:" John 14:27. You can't
buy rest. Jesus said "Come unto me and I will
give you rest." Matthew 11 :28. You can't buy a
sound mind. "For God hath not given us the
spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of
a sound mind." II Timothy 1:17. Jesus saves
from the uttermost to the guttermost.
In the Leavenworth Prison where I have
preached many times, I met a man that had two
steel hooks for hands and fingers because one
night he came in drunk and while intoxicated,
he killed the best friend he ever had-a loving,
praying wife. When he began to sober and
realize what he had done, he went down to the
store where he cut meat. He turned on the big
saws and chopped off both of his arms at the
elbow and was found bleeding to death. They
rushed him to the hospital and then gave him
life in the penitentiary. The Lord saved him in
one of the services and he is now out, sharing
his testimony with others.
I picked up Old Captain Mack, known as
"Bear Tracks," a warden in the Texas prison
system, and brought him to the Lighthouse one
night to fish. He gave this testimony to the
boys. A man had killed four people and they
put him in the penitentiary for life. He killed
three more in the penitentiary, which made a
total of seven. They put him in solitary for four-
teen long years, waiting for him to die. Some-
body gave him a Bible and he began to read it
and got saved. After he was saved, he became
a Bible teacher in the prison. He was later re-
leased and became a missionary to the Indians.
Old Captain Mack said, "I believe he was a
changed man."
For forty-five years I have preached in
prisons and churches and jails these four things:
Number One. "All have sinned" because we
were born in sin. Number Two. You can't save
yourself. We are helplessly lost. Number Three.
Christ died for our sins and bore our sins in His
own body. He took my part and transplanted
His heart and made me a new creature. Number
Four. Today is the day of salvation. In a tent
campaign near Waco many years ago, a woman
said on Friday morning, "I plan to give my heart
to Christ Sunday morning when the invitation
is given." She came into the service at 11:00
o'clock and sat on the second row in front of
this preacher. While I read Isaiah 53 she fell
over in the seat and four men carried her dead
body out of the church. She was forty-five min-
utes away from the time she said she was going
to give her heart to Christ. We used to sing in
our brush arbor meetings, "Tomorrow's sun
may never rise To bless thy long deluded sight;
This is the time, O then be wise, Be saved, O
tonight."
I invite you to board this unusual train
where God is the superintendent. Jesus Himself
is the train, the Holy Spirit is the ticket agent
and the engineer, the Word of God is the ticket
and you will have to present your birth certifi-
cate as your boarding pass, because "you MUST
be born again." The roadbed is the blood shed.
The cross-ties-one of them is the virgin birth
and the sinless life of Jesus, and the other is the
atoning death and the glorious resurrection of
Jesus Christ. Everyone on this train is happy
because they are holy and there are no wrecks
nor robbers, and there is only one destination
and that is Heaven. I invite you to get on board.
There are two steps that lead to the entrance of
this wonderful train-repentance and faith.
"Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish."
Luke 13:5. "Now commandeth all men every-
where to repent." Acts 17:30. "As many as re-
ceived Him, to them gave He power to become
the Sons of God, even to them that BELIEVE
on His name." John 1:12. "For God so loved
the world that He gave His only begotten Son
that whosoever BELIEVETH in Him should not
perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16.
"Verily, verily I say unto you, He that heareth
my Word and BELIEVETH on Him that sent me
hath everlasting life." John 5:24. As you step
on board, claim these two sweet and blessed
promises, "Him that cometh unto me I will in
no wise cast out." John 6:37, and "Whosoever
shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be
saved." Romans 10:13. Your ticket is paid and
punched and your birth certificate is signed in
the blood of the Lamb.
A man was showing a friend through his
tremendous collection of trophies that he had
gathered as a big game hunter in many coun-
tries. This friend asked him which was his fa-
vorite trophy and he pointed to a tiger skin on
the floor with blood stains on it. The man was
a little surprised and asked him why he had
chosen one of the more common trophies for
his favorite, and he lold him this story. "My big
brother and I were in the jungle of Africa walk-
ing down a little trail. He looked above me on a
big Limb and saw a tiger that was just fixing to
plunge onto my shoulders. He gave me a shove
and the tiger landed on my brother. Before I
could get off the ground and point my gun, the
tiger had cut him to pieces, and even though I
killed the tiger, my big brother bled to death.
The blood you see on that skin is my big broth-
er's blood. He actually died for me."
And, oh. my sinner friend, as I close this
message, I am thankful that my big Brother,
the Lord Jesus Christ died for me and for you.
I love Him as my choicest trophy. Whatever
trophies I may win, I will be glad to present to
Him when I enter into that glory land where
the sun will never set and no graves will ever
dot the hillsides of Glory, nor any hearse
wheels crawl gently down those golden streets.
Will you say right now, "I confess I am a
sinner and I need Jesus and I will receive Him
into my heart." As you read this final verse of
an invitation song, ask Him to come in and
wash away your sins with His own precious
blood.
"Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidd'st me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come! I come!"
Please sign the commitment: "I am changing
trains from the Amtrak of Sin to the I AM Track
of the Saviour."
