Immensity & Infinity – Attributes of God

[very similar to Omnipresence, which is a narrower concept]

Definition: Absence of Limitation

"His understanding" [is infinite] embraces everything there is to know. (Ps 147.5)

He "inhabits eternity." (Isa 57.15)

"Heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain" Him. (1 Kings 8:21)

"He is not far from each one of us." (Acts 17.27)

"Do I not fill heaven and earth?" (Jeremiah 23.24)

"...such a one was caught up to the third heaven. ...heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter." (2 Cor 12: 2-4)

A place unknown to just about everyone?

Positive Definition: "He fills all that can be filled with all of Himself all the time."

Negative Definition: "There is no place where He is not."

Scriptures:

1 Kings 8:27 But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?

Deuteronomy 10:14 Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD’S thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.

Psalms 113:4 The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens.

Psalm 139:7-16

Psalms 139:7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

Psalms 139:8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

Psalms 139:9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

Psalms 139:10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

Psalms 139:11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.

Psalms 139:12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

Psalms 139:13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.

Psalms 139:14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

Psalms 139:15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

Psalms 139:16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

Jeremiah 23:24 Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.

2 Corinthians 12:2-4 I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. 3 And I know such a man——whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows—— 4 how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.

Psalms 90:8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

Proverbs 15:3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

2 Chronicles 2:6 But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him?

2 Chronicles 6:18 But will God in very deed dwell with men on the earth? behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house which I have built!

ULet them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven.

Isaiah 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

Isaiah 66:1 Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?

Daniel 4:35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

Ephesians 1:23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

Application to God’s Attribute of Immensity to Our Christian life and Prayer Life:

God’s immensity is called an incommunicable attribute, that is an absolute or non-relative, not communicable. It is one that we cannot relate to, one that we cannot practice like the other communicable attributes: Truth, Justice, Holiness, etc.

But there is still an application to this attribute. It has to do with the second commandment:

Ex 20:3-63 "You shall have no other gods before Me.

4 "You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;

5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,

6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

This is like ‘putting God in a Box!’ If I can encase God, He can be relegated to a place I am not, thus I am no longer accountable to Him!

You say: What Do You mean?

Well we do it after a sort at Christmas time: Jesus is just a baby in a manger.

List some other ways:

  • I put God in a Box when I say, "I can worship [my idea of] God out in Nature-- I don't need to go to a church." This is in opposition to God's clear command that we are to submit to Local church Leadership willingly (See Heb 10.25, and notice the doctrine of the church in the entire New Testament. More on this is at The TBC Constitution section of the Church in the Bible.)
  • Putting God in a shrine is another way of putting God in a Box.
  • Making Man a God such as humanism does is like putting God in a box when we exalt man above God.
  • All these are really committing idolatry. Idolatry can be of two types:
    • Physical (God’s of stone, etc.)
    • Spiritual (the worship of things other than God with our human spirit).
  • Think of your own now...
