Prayer Principle 3A: Submission Sensitivity Mr. C. Pat Lanyon

Introduction:(3A. Submission) Sensitivity to Submission

In the last five weeks we have been trying to understand what Jesus meant by saying in prayer, "Your will be done." We have made some observations, and we have looked at specific statements about what exactly God’s will is as found in Scripture. And we have realized that God’s will being done is actually wrapped up in decisions we make or choices in how we live life. We see that God expects us to find out what He wants us to do in each day. Then by knowing His word and applying knowledge to life choices in the time each day gives us, we will be obedient to this command.

Since He expects us to understand His will and do it, we realize He is clear when He reveals it to us through His word. Now we ought to ask Him to help us to receive it as being His will.

So today we consider what it means to pray for, and to be sensitive to, His teachings regarding His will for us.

Application

(From the Outline) I pray that Your will would be done. Please help me to...

CL 1.9ff
1B. BE FILLED with the knowledge of Your will.
I will need to fill myself...

1C. In all WISDOM and

2C. [in all] SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING – I realize as I am seeking to do this, it will require a receptive spirit obtained only through key ingredients below (1D.- 5D.) Only through developing these Character Traits can I gain spiritual wisdom and understanding.

[Pr. 4:23 issues of life Deal with Self-will; it naturally, and automatically opposes God’s will.

PR 4.23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.]

Submission to God’s will is difficult because we have a carnal and sinful human spirit that opposes God and His will. Correcting outward actions is done by dealing or keeping our heart’s attitude correct and godly.

PS 48.14; 32.8; PP 3:14-15; JS 24.23; PS 25.4,5,9; 40.6-8; PS 73.24; IS 66.1,2; PS 31.3; 2 PE 1.8; 1 KI 19.12;

1D. SENSITIVITY to recognize Your guidance.

1E. God does in fact lead us.

PS 48.14 For this is God,

Our God forever and ever;

He will be our guide Even to death.

Ps 32.8 I will instruct you

and teach you in the way you should go;

I will guide you with My eye.

2E. We can know it whenever we are or are not doing His will!

Phil. 3.14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.

3E. An "Inclined heart" Is Needed:

Joshua 24:23 "Now therefore," he said,

"put away the foreign gods which are among you,

and incline your heart to the LORD God of Israel."

4E. David’s Secret for Submission to God: A Meek Attitude

Ps 25:4 Show me Your ways, O LORD;

Teach me Your paths.

5 Lead me in Your truth and teach me,

For You are the God of my salvation;

On You I wait all the day.

Ps 25:9 The humble He guides in justice, And the humble He teaches His way.

Psalm 40:6 Sacrifice and offering

You did not desire;

My ears You have opened.

Burnt offering and sin offering

You did not require.

7 Then I said, "Behold, I come;

In the scroll of the book it is written of me.

8 I delight to do Your will, O my God,

And Your law is within my heart."

Ps. 73:24 You will guide me with Your counsel,

And afterward receive me to glory.

Isa 66:2 For all those things My hand has made, And all those things exist," Says the LORD. "But on this one will I look:

On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word.

5E. God’s Authority Is Behind His Guidance:

Ps. 31:3 For You are my rock and my fortress;

Therefore, for Your name's sake, Lead me and guide me.

6E. Ignoring God’s Will Brings Loss and Inability to Hear His still small voice

2 PE 1.8 For if these things [character traits in vv 5-8] are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.

1KI 19.11-12

11 Then He said, "Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD." And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake;

12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. [How God revealed His will to Elijah]

Sensitivity toward God is a very important issue to consider. While God is very merciful and slow to judge, He operates with resolved consistency to His law. Elijah in the above illustration was about to be told several things about God’s will, but we can see that God was not very pleased with him by his prayer for suicide. Elijah was told among other things to anoint his successor! He soon was taken to heaven. These verses do tell us that God wants us to listen carefully and receptively to Him when He is speaking.

Application:

1. I will list 5 different ways that God has lead me in the past to do something and will remember how to be sensitive in the same way now.

[For example: 1)Pastor says something in a sermon; 2)I read a verse in a devotional for the same day; 3)A friend tells me on the same subject. 4)I hear a biblical radio program discussing the same subject]

2. I will write down verses that remind me most about being sensitive to God under this section for my prayer time.
