II. "Mentoring-Emotional & Spiritual Encouragements"

Truth Baptist church, 6-13-98, Men's Meeting 8am

Dr. Charles Wood

  • A. 7 Categories of "FRIENDS"
    • 1. Convenience Friends--"wear" easy; always around. Not close. Not "dinner" friends.
    • 2. Special Interest Friends--e.g. hobbyists.
    • 3. Historical Friends--never known [except through writings]; deceased. e.g. Spurgeon, Maxwell--leadership.
    • 4. Cross road Friends--one with a lifelong impact.
    • 5. Cross generational Friends--age no factor.
    • 6. Close Friends--few of these, rare to have more than 3 or 4, some have none, especially men.
    • 7. Mentor Friends--they "grow" with us. e.g. Reuben. Ewert. Living the Truth Ministries

  • B. 8 Things "A Mentor ..." (Has) "Barnabas" Son of Encouragement. AC 4.32-37
    • Has A Generous Spirit. Time, Listening ear, not only $, Fun to give.
    • Has A Gracious Spirit. AC 9.26 Takes time to assimilate others into the body, makes an outcast part of the group.
    • Gets Excited when good things happen to others in the group. AC 11.19-25 Plays NOT "Can you top this?!" BUT "Can you tell me more?"

    • Enjoys God's Blessing. AC 13.1-5 We are blessed to be a blessing.

    • Compliment him on spiritual progress.
    • Be Available and Willing to Listen.
    • Be a Cheerleader in Life.
    • Jump in and Help Him with Something.
    • Stand Up for Him.
    • Help Him Gain "Perspective" (seeing life from another's point of view).
    •
  • D. Challenges
    • Who are Yours? Who do you pour yourself into? List them:

    • Who can you add to this list?

    • What have you done in the last seven days?

    • To What degree are you willing to sacrifice?
