Prayer, Principle 5A. Forgiveness-Beatitude: Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness

Review

The Meaning of Meek:

It is the opposite to self-assertiveness and self interest: To be meek is to seek to have a sensitive reception to the holiness of God.

From the Prayer Notebook:

Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

5A. CONFESSION – As I have kept short sin-debts by immediate confession of sins You have revealed, I now pause to examine my heart further for wrong attitudes. As You convict, I will once again make confession of my sin and remember it's results.

Matthew 5.3-10 "Blessed are..."

1B. THE BEATITUDES – Lord, help me...

3)the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

1C. To obtain spiritual goals You expect, that I might receive the fullest reward in heaven.

4)they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.

2C. To weep over sin You reveal to me, that I might have the peace of Your forgiveness.

5)the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

3C. To yield when I am shown sin, so that I may receive my earthly inheritance.

Introduction:

6)those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be filled,

4C. To desire being right in thoughts and actions, so that I will live right continuously.

hunger= 3983 peinao {pi-nah'-o} from the same as 3993 (through the idea of pinching toil; "pine"); 1) to hunger, be hungry 1a) to suffer want, to be needy 1b) to crave ardently, to seek with eager desire

thirst= 1) to suffer thirst, suffer from thirst; figuratively, those who are said to thirst who painfully feel their want of, and eagerly long for, those things by which the soul is refreshed, supported, strengthened.

The Meaning of Hungering and Thirsting for Righteousness – thus– Being Filled is...

Interestingly both human needs of food and water are pictured in this beatitude. Thus, as thirst is an advanced degree of hunger, actions are the product and advanced degree of thoughts. When thoughts are right continuously, actions follow automatically; the by product of the hunger and thirst is the filling.

"Remembering the feelings brings the fulfillment."

Albert Barnes Commentary:

Verse 6. Blessed are they that hunger, etc. Hunger and thirst, here, are expressive of strong desire. Nothing would better express the strong desire which we ought to feel to obtain righteousness, than hunger and thirst. No wants are so keen, none so imperiously demand supply as these. They occur daily; and when long continued, as in case of those shipwrecked, and doomed to wander months or years over burning sands, with scarcely any drink or food, nothing is more distressing. An ardent desire for anything is often represented in the Scriptures by hunger and thirst, #Ps 42:1,2 63:1,2. A desire for the blessings of pardon and peace; a deep sense of sin, and want, and wretchedness, is also represented by thirsting, #Is 55:1,2. Those that are perishing for want of righteousness; that feel that they are lost sinners, and strongly desire to be holy, shall be filled. Never was there a desire to be holy, which God was not willing to gratify. And the gospel of Christ has made provision to satisfy all who truly desire to be holy. See #Is 55:1-13 65:13 Joh 4:14 6:35 7:37,38 Ps 17:15.

"for they shall be filled" #Ps 34:19 Is 65:13 [It must mean the literal filling received in the after life]:

Ps 34:19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.

Isa 65:13 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed:
