2011 in Pictures
for the CT Lanyons
1. 24" Huge Snow storm in January.
(Our 24"/24 hrs record snow day, Jan 12, 2011)
This storm damaged hundreds if not thousands of homes in CT
causing roof and wall damage costing the insurance industry millions of dollars
for repairs. A bowling alley roof collapsed just hundreds of feet from our
church building. CT residents struggled if any attempt at all was made to clear
the roofs of snow. We had to use a 50' hose from our hot water tank and wade
through snow well over the knee just to get to the side of the house, and break
over 6" thick ice dams on the north side of our house.

Also this year, we noticed tragic tornado activity throughout
the south, and the Joplin tornado almost wiped off this town where my parents
grew up.
DAVID Tests for Brown Belt January 20
Shortly after this David tested for two belts, and now has his
Brown Belt. Only Brown/Black belt remains before he will be actually testing for
his BLACK BELT!

2. Earthquake
Aug 23 we experienced an unusual 5.8 magnitude quake. Pat
hardly noticed it at home, but Chris was driving down the street and noticed the
shaking of buildings as she drove up to Main Street. Reports were eve more
graphic all over the east coast.
3. Tropical Storms:
Hurricane Irene
August 28-29 we all experienced another Hurricane. Irene began
near Provo and swept right over the island but was weaker than it became as it
directly targeted the East Coast causing $7 B in damage.
Tropical Storm Lee
We drove 1500 miles just to witness this storm enter Pensacola
as we dropped Joseph off at PCC. The storm later made it's way up to New England
and flooded many areas right after Hurricane Irene swept the entire East Coast.
Freak ALFRED Storm
This October 28 storm came early in a very warm fall day when
more than 80% of the foliage still remained on the trees. The 6" here and 12"
north-east CT storm laid very heavy snow on trees totally leafed. The result was
a war-zone look of the countryside and power lines downed most of the state. It
will literally be decades before some of the damaged trees decompose simply
because they are in wooded areas totally unreachable by equipment capable of
trimming the trees, should there be an impetus to remove them. We lost our power
for over 6 days, and some others as much as 11 or 12 days. (The only blessing of
this storm was it wiped Halloween of the calendar this year!)
