Part III: Scripture With References

Scripture A B C D E F G H I (Outline)

Text: Matthew 6.9-13

(NKJV text) The MANNER of Prayer: Principle/Description

Our A personal relationship– I am His child. ( My needs– God is personal; He is concerned about me and my needs!)

Father A family relationship– He is my Father. (I can cry out to Him ‘Daddy’ – Abba)

Rom.8:15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father."

Jesus had this kind of relationship. See also

Mk. 14:36 And He said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will."

in heaven A humble, yet exalted, relationship– I pray from earth.

PS.113.4-6

Psalm 113:4-6 God humbles Himself to behold us or notice our prayers.

The LORD is high above all nations, His glory above the heavens. [5] Who is like the LORD our God, Who dwells on high, [6] Who humbles Himself to behold The things that are in the heavens and in the earth?

Application: Every prayer heard of God is an example of the humility display of God- for me when I dislike His call to me to be humble and receptive to His will for any issue of life.

Hallowed be Your name.

DT 6.5; HE 11.6, EX 3.14; DA 2.20; 1 PE 3.15

1A. ADORATION – I set You apart today because of...

To hallow is to set apart.(=To put special reverence upon, make high priority of, spend special time with – a few of the many ways to HALLOW GOD NAME) "He is" [He. 11.6]

Deut. 6:5

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

Hebrews 11:6

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Exodus 3:14

And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And He said, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.' "

Daniel 2:20

Daniel answered and said: "Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, For wisdom and might are His.

1 Peter 3:15

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;

PR 3:5-6 Acknowledge Him in all your ways. The two basic ways to hallow God are 1B) to recognize His person– God's IDENTITY. The second is 2B) to recognize His Works – His ACTIVITY.

[personal application:] Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; [6] In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

1B. WHO YOU ARE – You are the God. (God's IDENTITY)

1 KI 8.27; JE 23.24; DT 10.14 1C. Infinite (endless)

1 Kings 8:27

But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built!

Jeremiah 23:24

Can anyone hide himself in secret places, So I shall not see him?" says the Lord; "Do I not fill heaven and earth?" says the Lord.

Deut. 10:14

Indeed heaven and the highest heavens belong to the Lord your God, also the earth with all that is in it.

PS 90.2 2C. Eternal (timeless, enduring) There never was time when God did not exist. He is Author of the experience we know as time and one day it will be no more. That is the essence of these scriptures:

Psalm 90:2

Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

PS 102.23-28; PS 39.4-5; Eph 5.16; Col 4.15

His years have no end! My years are temporary while I am on earth- I must make them eternal in value.

Psalm 102:23-28

He weakened my strength in the way; He shortened my days.

[24] I said, "O my God, Do not take me away in the midst of my days; Your years are throughout all generations.

[25] Of old You laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands.

[26] They will perish, but You will endure; Yes, they will all grow old like a garment; Like a cloak You will change them, And they will be changed.

[27] But You are the same, And Your years will have no end.

[28] The children of Your servants will continue, And their descendants will be established before You."

Psalm 39:4-5

"Lord, make me to know my end, And what is the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am.

[5] Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my age is as nothing before You; Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor. Selah.

Application: I must redeem time because of it's non-eternal nature.

Eph. 5.16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Col. 4.5 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.

JA 1.17, HE 6.17 3C. Immutable (changeless)

James 1:17

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

Hebrews 6:17

Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath,

God changelessness is the basis of all His other attributes. Changeless God; changeless counsel; impossible to lie!

JN 4.24 4C. Simple (understandable-enough to worship)

John 4:24

God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

The Samaritan woman already was worshiping in spirit, but apparently from the context, she was not doing it according to truth– God true standard. Jesus implies that she could worship according to truth.

DT 4.39; 6.4 5C. Unified (solitary, undivided)

Deut. 4:39

Therefore know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the Lord Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.

Deut. 6:4

"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!

EP 1.11, MT 20.15 6C. Sovereign (supreme ruling)

RO 9.20,21; PS 37.23; IS 46.9-11, 2 TH 3.10 "provide"A Planner

Ephesians. 1:11

In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will,

Matthew 20:15

Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am good?'

Romans 9:20-21

But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed, "Why have you made me like this?" Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?

Psalm 37:23

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way.

Isaiah 46:9-11

Remember the former things of old, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me,

[10] Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, 'My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure,'

[11] Calling a bird of prey from the east, The man who executes My counsel, from a far country. Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have purposed it; I will also do it.

1 Thes. 3:10

For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.

work= 1)to work, labour, do work; 2)to trade, to make gains by trading, "do business", all of which require planning. Just as God plans well, He expects the same of man – yet He then expects man to surrender those well laid plans to change by His sovereign design.

[personal application:] Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; [6] In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

If God is sovereign, then I cannot suffer harm by trusting Him, and making Him sovereign over all. I can be sure He'll guide me aright.

PR 15.3 7C. Omnipresent (everywhere)

I Cannot escape His influence (compare 1C)

Proverbs 15:3

The eyes of the Lord are in every place, Keeping watch on the evil and the good.

[personal application:] This enables God 1)to judge and reward my works, 2)to answer my prayer for anyone in anyplace I or they are in. Imagine that!

PS 139.4; JN 16.30 8C. Omniscient (all-knowing; omnisapience all-wise)

None can out-wit or out-know Him; Understands all!

Psalm 139:4

For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.

John 16:30

Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God."

PS 147.5; MT 28.18; PS 68.34 9C. Omnipotent (all-powerful; strong)

Psalm 147:5

Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.

Matthew 28:18

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

Psalm 68:34

Ascribe strength to God; His excellence is over Israel, And His strength is in the clouds.

PS 9.8; JN 7.24 10C. Just (One equal to judge all)

Psalm 9:8

He shall judge the world in righteousness, And He shall administer judgment for the peoples in uprightness.

[personal application:] John 7:24

Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment."

1 JN 4.10 11C. Loving (One who seeks the best)

1 John 4:10

In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

[personal application:] Show unconditional and self-less love toward others, and self, just like He did and now /does!

JUDE 21,24; MI 6.8; LK 6.36 1D. Mercy (Withholds Judgment) excellent suggestion: mercies word- study.

God gives His mercy for His own joy [J.I.Packer, Knowing God]– He is an emotional God, and we are made emotionally in His image!

Jude 1:21,24

keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

[24] Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?

A very significant OT word= checed, Hebrew 2617 kheh'-sed; from Hebrew 2616 (chacad); kindness; by implication (towards God) piety; rarely (by opposition) reproof, or (subjective) beauty :- favour, good deed (-liness, -ness), kindly, (loving-) kindness, merciful (kindness), mercy, pity, reproach...

NT word= eleeo, Greek 1653, el-eh-eh'-o; from Greek 1656 (eleos); to compassionate (by word or deed, specially by divine grace) :- have compassion (pity on), have (obtain, receive, shew) mercy (on).

Mercy is distinguished from grace by the definition unreceived judgment that ought to have been administered.

Webster's New World Dictionary: refraining from harming offenders, enemies, etc.

Luke 6:36

Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

HE 4.16; 1 PE 5.10

2D. Grace (Gives Undeserved Help)

God’s nature is full of grace

1 Peter 5:10

But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.

Grace is defined in the Greek as:

1- charis, khar'-ece, Greek 5485; from Greek 5463 (chairo); graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act (abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life; including gratitude) :- acceptable, benefit, favour, gift, grace (-ious), joy, liberality, pleasure, thank (-s, -worthy).

2- chairo, khah'ee-ro, Greek 5463; a primary verb; to be "cheer"ful, i.e. calmly happy or well-off; impersonal especially as salutation (on meeting or parting), be well:- farewell, be glad, God speed, greeting, hail, joy (-fully), rejoice.

Grace is a throne!

Hebrews 4:16

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

PR 25:15; RO 2:4-5; RO 3:24-26 3D. Forbearance (Shows Patience and Longsuffering)

Pr 25:15

By long forbearance a ruler is persuaded, And a gentle tongue breaks a bone.

Rom 2:4-5

4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

Rom 3:24-26

being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

4D. Goodness (Seeks Good in All)

Old Testament

Ge 1:31

Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

The Father’s witness to Moses:

Ex 34:6

And the LORD passed before him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth,

God’s Promise to David:

2Sa 7:28

"And now, O Lord GOD, You are God, and Your words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant.

Solomon’s prayer to God when the Temple was Completed:

2Ch 6:41

"Now therefore, Arise, O LORD God, to Your resting place, You and the ark of Your strength. Let Your priests, O LORD God, be clothed with salvation, And let Your saints rejoice in goodness.

David’s Confidence in the Worst Case Possible:

Ps 52:1

To the Chief Musician. A Contemplation of David when Doeg the Edomite went and told Saul, and said to him, "David has gone to the house of Ahimelech." Why do you boast in evil, O mighty man? The goodness of God endures continually. [To read the story see 1 Samuel 21:7]

As David Remembers it toward Israel’s poor:

Ps 68:10

Your congregation dwelt in it; You, O God, provided from Your goodness for the poor.

Hosea’s foretelling Israel’s acknowledging of His goodness:

Ho 3:5

Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the LORD their God and David their king. They shall fear the LORD and His goodness in the latter days.

New Testament:

Paul Clearly Teaches it as A Part of Salvation:

Ro 2:4

Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?

One of Two Main Ways People Come to God:

Ro 11:22

Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.

Paul Admits God’s Goodness Gives Him Pleasure:

2Th 1:11

Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power,

JN 14.6

12C. Truthful (One who is always right)

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

IS 40.13,14 13C. Free (One bound by none)

Isaiah 40:13-14

Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, Or as His counselor has taught Him? [14] With whom did He take counsel, and who instructed Him, And taught Him in the path of justice? Who taught Him knowledge, And showed Him the way of understanding?

1 JN 1.5; PS 99 14C. Holy (one separate from all other)

1 John 1:5

This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.

God holiness is His separateness from all aspects of His creation. He is [to be] set apart, especially when being worshiped.

Psalm 99:1-9

The Lord reigns; Let the peoples tremble! He dwells between the cherubim; Let the earth be moved!

[2] The Lord is great in Zion, And He is high above all the peoples.

[3] Let them praise Your great and awesome name– He is holy.

[4] The King's strength also loves justice; You have established equity; You have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.

[5] Exalt the Lord our God, And worship at His footstool– He is holy.

[6] Moses and Aaron were among His priests, And Samuel was among those who called upon His name; They called upon the Lord, and He answered them.

[7] He spoke to them in the cloudy pillar; They kept His testimonies and the ordinance He gave them.

[8] You answered them, O Lord our God You were to them God-Who-Forgives*, Though You took vengeance on their deeds.

[9] Exalt the Lord our God, And worship at His holy hill; For the Lord our God is holy.

*God forgiveness (vs.8) is the highest contrast to be made with His holiness.

Most valuable gift I could give to them: My faith in God.

Genesis 2:18, 24

And the LORD God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him." 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

1 Cor. 7:1,7,24,35,40

Now concerning the things of which you wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. 7 For I wish that all men were even as I myself. But each one has his own gift from God, one in this manner and another in that. 24 Brethren, let each one remain with God in that state in which he was called. 35 And this I say for your own profit, not that I may put a leash on you, but for what is proper, and that you may serve the Lord without distraction. 40 But she is happier if she remains as she is, according to my judgment– and I think I also have the Spirit of God.

Matthew 19:3-12

The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?" [4] And He answered and said to them, "Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female,' [5] and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? [6] So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate." [7] They said to Him, "Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?" [8] He said to them, "Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. [9] And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery." [10] His disciples said to Him, "If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry."

[11] But He said to them, "All cannot accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given: [12] For there are eunuchs who were born thus from their mother's womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. 1CO 12;RO12;EP4;1PE4 3C. MINISTRY (Spiritual gift) Put your spiritual ministries here.

1 Cor. 12:5-11

There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. [6] And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. [7] But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: [8] for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, [9] to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, [10] to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. [11] But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

Sign gifts: healings, miracle working, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues; were all given temporarily to NT disciples and believers just after the ascension to affirm it's validity. Thereafter, they were not needed.

Romans 12:1-8

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. [2] And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

[3] For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. [4] For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, [5] so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. [6] Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; [7] or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; [8] he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

Ephes. 4:1-16

I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, [2] with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, [3] endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. [4] There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; [5] one Lord, one faith, one baptism; [6] one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

[7] But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ's gift. [8] Therefore He says: "When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men." [9] (Now this, "He ascended"– what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? [10] He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) [11] And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, [12] for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, [13] till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; [14] that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, [15] but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head– Christ– [16] from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

1 Peter 4:10-11

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. [11] If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

RO 8.13; JN 12.24

2C. Death to my sinful nature.

It is by the Spirit you can put to death the deeds of the body

Romans 8:13

For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

John 12:24

Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.

3C. Balance in properly redeeming time.

redeeming the time, (the ETERNAL God REQUIRES this) for the days are evil, (Righteousness is at stake) number our days (Our time is extremely limited), make straight paths (A narrow, disciplined walk is implied). Balance comes only by KNOWING and EXERCISING priorities: THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE. IT PRODUCES THE GREATEST SATISFACTION OF LIFE AND WILL YIELD THE GREATEST REWARDS IN HEAVEN, AND LEAVES THE GREATEST LEGACY FOR MY CHILDREN. BUT IT IS ALSO SOMETHING GOD TEACHES US, AND WE (THROUGH TIME) MUST LEARN!

Ephes. 5:15-16

See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, [16] redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Hebrews 12:13

and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.

Proverbs 4:26

Ponder the path of your feet, And let all your ways be established.

Psalm 119:59

I thought about my ways, And turned my feet to Your testimonies.

PR 4.23 ( issues of life) SANCTIFICATION: Deal with self-will – It naturally, automatically opposes God's will!

Proverbs 4:23

Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

2B. ELEMENTS OF LIFE – I pray for...

MT 6.33; CL 3.2 1C. SPIRITUAL purity. First.

Matthew 6:33

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Col. 3:2

Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.

GL 5.22-23;1 CO 9.27; PR 25.28 2C. PHYSICAL control (of food, sleep, exercise, sex– the basic human drives)

Self control is a fruit of the Holy Spirit and must be built into the daily fabric of life by choice, not legislation. (Legislation may be used to approach, but daily choice alone enables. The failure to do so brings a defenselessness that evil will utterly destroy.

Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

1 Cor. 9:27

But I discipline [keep under, AV] my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

Proverbs 25:28

Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls.

[personal applications:] Physicals drives: Food, Sex, Sleep, Exercise; For Sex: Any sexual expression/ stimulation is to be the object of my mate's desire for My body, and hers/his for my gratification. This effectively eliminates justification for all masturbation, acts OR thoughts, anything that leads to such physical pleasures, as excluded from God's will at any time apart from being in the presence of my spouse.

1 Corinthians 7: 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.

PP 4.8 3C. MENTAL/EMOTIONAL– [right thinking]

Things that are: true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, of any virtue, and anything praiseworthy.

Philip. 4:8 TNJPuLGRV

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy– meditate on these things.

PP 2.3 4C. SOCIAL – favor (time with/for others.)

Philip. 2:3

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.

1 CO 4.2;MT24.45-51;25.14-30; PS 96.7-9

5C. FINANCIAL stewardship.

Accountability for ability and talents given motivates faithfulness. Remembrance of that accountability is essential on a daily basis. Stewardship is worship.

1 Cor. 4:2

Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.

Matthew 24:45-51

"Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food in due season? [46] Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing. [47] Assuredly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all his goods. [48] But if that evil servant says in his heart, 'My master is delaying his coming,' [49] and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, [50] the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him and at an hour that he is not aware of, [51] and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 25:14-30

"For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. [15] And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. [16] Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. [17] And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. [18] But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord's money. [19] After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them. [20] So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, 'Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.' [21] His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.' [22] He also who had received two talents came and said, 'Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.' [23] His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.' [24] Then he who had received the one talent came and said, 'Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. [25] And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.' [26] But his lord answered and said to him, 'You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. [27] So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. [28] Therefore take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents. [29] For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. [30] And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

Observation regarding My family: to not risk Any portion of talent given me forbids my capacity to multiply it! The one above who only conservatively invested is the one who lost it all!

Application: Great preparation is required to prepare for the use of & multiplication of talents.

Application: There should be a desire to advance to the greater things in life, to hear God say will make you ruler over many. To not do so is to loose all but eternal life.

2 John 1:8

Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward.

Psalm 96:7-9

Give to the LORD, O families of the peoples, Give to the LORD glory and strength. [8] Give to the LORD the glory due His name; Bring an offering, and come into His courts. [9] Oh, worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness! Tremble before Him, all the earth.

Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

5A. CONFESSION – As I have kept short sin-debts by immediate confession of sins You have revealed, I now pause to examine my heart further for wrong attitudes. As You convict, I will once again make confession of my sin and remember it's results.

Matthew 5.3-10 "Blessed are..."

1B. THE BEATITUDES – Lord, help me...

3)the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

1C. To obtain spiritual goals You expect, that I might receive the fullest reward in heaven.

– from the OnLine Bible Lexicon, Strong's numbers definitions:

poor= 4434 ptwcov ptochos pto-khos' from ptwssw ptosso (to crouch, akin to 4422 and the alternate of 4098); used here as - poor (30 times, KJV)

DEFINED AS :1) reduced to beggary, begging, asking alms OR 2) destitute of wealth, influence, position, honour; lowly, afflicted: destitute of the Christian virtues and eternal riches; helpless, powerless to accomplish an end OR 3) lacking in anything: as respects their spirit, i.e. destitute of wealth of learning and intellectual culture which the schools afford (men of this class most readily give themselves up to Christ's teaching and proved them selves fitted to lay hold of the heavenly treasure)

spirit= 4151 pneuma pneuma pnyoo'-mah from 4154; here used as - human (spirit) (49 times) DEFINED AS 2) the spirit, i.e. the vital principal by which the body is animated; the rational spirit, the power by which the human being feels, thinks, decides; the soul OR 5) the disposition or influence which fills and governs the soul of any one; the efficient source of any power, affection, emotion, desire, etc.

The poor in spirit recognize they are destitute of God's wealth spiritually, and are thus motivated to obtain it to a greater degree than they now possess (relative to what God would desire, in spite of the growth and maturity they already have attained).

4)they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.

2C. To weep over sin You reveal to me, that I might have the peace of Your forgiveness.

mourn= 3996 pentheo pentheo{pen-theh'-o} from 3997; NKJV & AV- mourn (7) also - wail (2) - bewail (1) [10] 1) to mourn; to mourn for, lament one

comforted= 3870 parakaleo parakaleo{par-ak-al-eh'-o} from 3844 and 2564; vb AV - comfort (23times) DEFINED AS 3) to console, to encourage and strengthen by consolation, to comfort; to receive consolation, be comforted

Those who weep and lament as though their sins grieve the holiness of God shall indeed receive comfort, consolation and encouragement which comes through forgiveness.

5)the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

3C. To yield when I am shown sin, so that I may receive my earthly inheritance.

meek= 4239 praus praus {prah-ooce'} apparently a primary word; TDNT - 6:645,929; adj AV - meek (3) 1) mildness of disposition, gentleness of spirit, meekness. Meekness toward God is that disposition of spirit in which we accept His dealings with us as good, and therefore without disputing or resisting. In the OT, the meek are those wholly relying on God rather than their own strength to defend them against injustice. Thus, meekness toward evil people means knowing God is permitting the injuries they inflict, that He is using them to purify His elect, and that He will deliver His elect in His time. (Is. 41:17, Lu. 18:1-8) Gentleness or meekness is the opposite to self-assertiveness and self interest. It stems from trust in God's goodness and control over the situation. The gentle person is not occupied with self at all. This is a work of the Holy Ghost, not of the human will. (Gal. 5:23)

To be meek is to seek to have a sensitive reception to the holiness of God.

6)those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be filled,

4C. To desire being right in thoughts and actions, so that I will live right continuously.

hunger= 3983 peinao {pi-nah'-o} from the same as 3993 (through the idea of pinching toil; "pine"); 1) to hunger, be hungry 1a) to suffer want, to be needy 1b) to crave ardently, to seek with eager desire

merciful= 1655 eleemon eleemon{el-eh-ay'-mone} adjective from 1653; AV - merciful (2) 1) merciful

mercy= 1653 eleeo eleeo {el-eh-eh'-o} from 1656; AV - have mercy on (14) - obtain mercy (8) - show mercy (2) - have compassion (1) - have compassion on (1) - have pity on (1) - have mercy (1) - have mercy upon (1) - receive mercy (1) [31] 1) to have mercy on, to help one afflicted or seeking aid, to bring help to the wretched

1656 eleos eleos {el'-eh-os} of uncertain affinity; n n AV - mercy (28) 1) mercy: kindness or good will towards the miserable and the afflicted, joined with a desire to help them 1a) of men towards men: to exercise the virtue of mercy, show one's self merciful 1b) of God towards men: in general providence; the mercy and clemency of God in providing and offering to men salvation by Christ

8)the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

6C. To have an undefiled conscience, that I might have intimate fellowship with You.

pure= 2513 katharos katharos {kath-ar-os'} of uncertain affinity AV - pure (17) - clean (10) - clear (1) [28] DEFINED AS 1c) ethically, free from corrupt desire, from sin and guilt; free from every admixture of what is false, sincere; genuine; blameless, innocent; unstained with the guilt of anything

9)the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God.

7C. To love and respect others as You do, so that I may have a godly testimony among them.

4160 poieo poieo {poy-eh'-o} 1a) to act rightly, do well; to carry out, to execute

10)those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

8C. To rejoice when I am hurt or suffering for doing right, that I may have 'the persecuted's' reward in heaven.

persecuted= 1377 dioko dioko {dee-o'-ko} a prolonged (and causative) form of a primary verb dio (to flee; compare the base of 1169 and 1249); AV - persecute (28) - follow after (6) - follow (4) - suffer persecution (3) - misc (3) [44] 1) to make to run or flee, put to flight, drive away 2) to run swiftly in order to catch a person or thing, to run after; to press on: figuratively of one who in a race runs swiftly to reach the goal; to pursue (in a hostile manner) 3) in any way whatever to harass, trouble, molest one; to persecute; to be maltreated, suffer persecution on account of something 4) without the idea of hostility, to run after, follow after: someone 5) metaphorically, to pursue i.e. to seek after eagerly, earnestly endeavour to acquire

Beatitudes are "attitudes" that ought to "be." Taking time to think about them creates them in the mind as I wait upon God in prayer. Beatitude is defined: "from Latin beatus, happy: perfect blessedness or happiness -"-Webster's New World Dictionary, p. 55

2B. The Doctrine of CONFESSION – Today I agree with You LORD that I have failed in the particular way(s) that You have revealed to me. Now I...

1 John 1:6

If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.

Psalm 66:18

If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear.

James 1:15

Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

Psalm 19:12-13

Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults. [13] Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, And I shall be innocent of great transgression.

1 JN 1.9 1C. CONFESS – that _____* was a sin in Your eyes because You said _____+.

*=specifically name the sin. +=name the scripture bringing awareness.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

confess= 3670 homologeo {hom-ol-og-eh'-o} from a compound of the base of 3674 and 3056; AV - confess (17) - profess (3) - promise (1) - give thanks (1) - confession is made (1) [23] 1) to say the same thing as another, i.e. to agree with, assent 2) to concede 2a) not to refuse, to promise

Confession is agreeing with God's attitude about sin– it is abominable to Him, ATTITUDE is very important.

PR 28.13 2C. FORSAKE – and turn from it, but only with Your help.

Proverbs 28:13

He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.

PS 103.12 3C. BELIEVE – that this sin is now removed from me. I will continue to renounce it and trust your Word.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.

To "believe" is to ACT as if it we true – that is forget the sin, and don't bring it up to God or others again.

*RO 5.9 4C. *Am FORGIVEN – and thus my offense is removed completely.

Romans 5:9

Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

In God's courtroom, "forgiveness" means full acquittal

*1 JN 1.7 5C. *Am CLEANSED – and thus my usefulness for service is restored also.

1 John 1:7

But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

"Cleansed" means my usefulness is to a large degree restored like plates just washed from the dinner table.

*PS 32.1; 51.12; MT 5.4 6C. *Am BLESSED – I have Your joy, peace, and favor restored to my life now.

Psalm 32:1

A Psalm of David. A Contemplation. Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered.

Psalm 51:12

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.

A special joy – from God comes to those who confess and forsake sin.

Some consequences of unconfessed sin:

Psalm 6:2

Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am weak; O LORD, heal me, for my bones are troubled.

Psalm 6:5-7

For in death there is no remembrance of You; In the grave who will give You thanks? [6] I am weary with my groaning; All night I make my bed swim; I drench my couch with my tears. [7] My eye wastes away because of grief; It grows old because of all my enemies.

Psalm 32:3-4

When I kept silent, my bones grew old Through my groaning all the day long. [4] For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was turned into the drought of summer. Selah

Psalm 38:2-8

For Your arrows pierce me deeply, And Your hand presses me down. [3] There is no soundness in my flesh Because of Your anger, Nor any health in my bones Because of my sin. [4] For my iniquities have gone over my head; Like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. [5] My wounds are foul and festering Because of my foolishness. [6] I am troubled, I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. [7] For my loins are full of inflammation, And there is no soundness in my flesh. [8] I am feeble and severely broken; I groan because of the turmoil of my heart.

Psalm 38:10-14

My heart pants, my strength fails me; As for the light of my eyes, it also has gone from me. [11] My loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague, And my relatives stand afar off. [12] Those also who seek my life lay snares for me; Those who seek my hurt speak of destruction, And plan deception all the day long. [13] But I, like a deaf man, do not hear; And I am like a mute who does not open his mouth. [14] Thus I am like a man who does not hear, And in whose mouth is no response.

Psalm 38:17

For I am ready to fall, And my sorrow is continually before me.

Psalm 38:19

But my enemies are vigorous, and they are strong; And those who hate me wrongfully have multiplied.

Psalm 102:3-11

For my days are consumed like smoke, And my bones are burned like a hearth. [4] My heart is stricken and withered like grass, So that I forget to eat my bread. [5] Because of the sound of my groaning My bones cling to my skin. [6] I am like a pelican of the wilderness; I am like an owl of the desert. [7] I lie awake, And am like a sparrow alone on the housetop. [8] My enemies reproach me all day long, Those who deride me swear an oath against me. [9] For I have eaten ashes like bread, And mingled my drink with weeping, [10] Because of Your indignation and Your wrath; For You have lifted me up and cast me away. [11] My days are like a shadow that lengthens, And I wither away like grass.

Psalm 102:23-24

He weakened my strength in the way; He shortened my days. [24] I said, "O my God, Do not take me away in the midst of my days; Your years are throughout all generations.

Psalm 143:3-4

For the enemy has persecuted my soul; He has crushed my life to the ground; He has made me dwell in darkness, Like those who have long been dead. [4] Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me; My heart within me is distressed.

Psalm 143:7

Answer me speedily, O LORD; My spirit fails! Do not hide Your face from me, Lest I be like those who go down into the pit.

Benefits of Refraining from sinning:

Psalm 15:1-5 A Psalm of David. [A stability in life that makes me immovable from a righteous lifestyle.]

LORD, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill? [2] He who walks uprightly, And works righteousness, And speaks the truth in his heart; [3] He who does not backbite with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor does he take up a reproach against his friend; [4] In whose eyes a vile person is despised, But he honors those who fear the LORD; He who swears to his own hurt and does not change; [5] He who does not put out his money at usury, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved.

Job 13:15-18 [Assurance of God’s Vindication at Our Rewards Time]

Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him. Even so, I will defend my own ways before Him. [16] He also shall be my salvation, For a hypocrite could not come before Him. [17] Listen carefully to my speech, And to my declaration with your ears. [18] See now, I have prepared my case, I know that I shall be vindicated.

JA 1.12-15,21; 1CO 10.13 1B. ENDURE Temptation – I recognize it is my responsibility to resist temptation to receive Your help in trials.

1 Cor. 10:13

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

James 1:12-15

Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. [13] Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. [14] But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. [15] Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

James 1:21

Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

The end of temptation is real. I must look for God's way of escape! James was written to "brethren" and his warning in v. 21 is not an admission the believer can lose his salvation, but an acknowledgment that sin has a real and devastating impact on the testimony [or, soul] of the believer. Making no provision for the flesh means removing every road it can take that will lead me away from God's will.

Romans 13:14

But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

The LIE; JN 8.44; RO 1.25; 2TH 2.10-11.

John 8:44

"Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren,

Psalm 39:1

To the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, "I will guard my ways, Lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle, While the wicked are before me."

Matthew 26:41

Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

Acts 20:31

Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.

1 Cor. 10:12

Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.

1 Cor. 16:13

Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.

Col. 4:2

Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving;

1 Peter 5:8

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

Rev. 3:2

Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God.

2 CO 9.8, 1PE 5.10 2B. PRESERVATION by GRACE – I believe that You will give me the necessary GRACE (help) to be victorious throughout life.

The God of all grace will provide abundance to overcome and bring victory in testing/ temptation's midst; we must Possess God's GRACE by faith.

2 Cor. 9:8

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.

1 Peter 5:10

But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.

But deliver us from the evil one.

1PE 3.7; 1 JN 2:15; RO 8.7;6.13; EP 4.24

3B. PROTECTION by ARMOR – I acknowledge now my need for deliverance from all evil: (From Satan, the World, and from my sinful Flesh) by putting on Your armor. I now put on...

I am to recognize it is spiritual WARFARE. My enemies will not stop until destruction of my soul/ loss of all spiritual reward is lost. Using armor is my responsibility, grace is God's provision. Armor is placed first by putting on the new man.

1 Peter 5:8 [Peter's Theology - from mercy, not unbending absolutes like John's]

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

1 John 2:15-17

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. [16] For all that is in the world– the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life– is not of the Father but is of the world. [17] And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

Romans 8:7

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.

Romans 6:13

And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

Ephes. 4:24

and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

Ephesians 6:10-18

14a)Having girded your waist with truth,

JA 1.16,22; AC 20.32 1C. The BELT OF TRUTH – I am sure the Bible is reality, the truth.

The assurance that the Bible is reliable and an honest witness of "truth" is protective gear that holds armor in place.

James 1:16, 22

Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. [22] But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

Acts 20:32

So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

14b)Having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

PS 11.7; 15.2; 106.3 2C. The BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS – I live intending to BE right always.

Psalm 11:7

For the LORD is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.

Psalm 15:1-2

A Psalm of David. LORD, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill? [2] He who walks uprightly, And works righteousness, And speaks the truth in his heart;

Psalm 106:3

Blessed are those who keep justice, And he who does righteousness at all times!

15)Having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

MT 4.19; AC 1.8 3C. The SHOES OF GOSPEL WITNESS – I eagerly prepare and tell others the 'good news' of peace that comes through Your salvation.

Matthew 4:19

Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men."

Acts 1:8

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

16) above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench the fiery darts of the wicked one.

PS 34.8; HE 11 4C. The SHIELD OF FAITH – I will so act today as to demonstrate I trust Your Word completely when Satan sows doubt in my heart.

Psalm 34:8

Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

Hebrews 11:1-2

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. [2] For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.

Men exhibit faith by their actions. Good Examples: Abel, Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Samuel, David, Daniel. Poor Examples: Cain, Lot, Samson, Saul, Achan, Ahab, Jonah.

17a) And take the helmet of salvation

1JN 5.11-13 5C. The HELMET OF SALVATION – I have unwavering assurance that I am saved.

1 John 5:11-13

And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. [12] He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. [13] These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

17b) And the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God;

PS 119.9-11; JO 1.8; Ps. 19.7-14, esp. 7,12-13

6C. The SWORD OF SCRIPTURE – I take the Bible and consistently memorize and meditate on passages that help me fight all evil.

Psalm 119:9-11

How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. [10] With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! [11] Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You!

Joshua 1:8

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Ps. 19.7a The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; [12] Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults. [13] Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, And I shall be innocent of great transgression.

18a)Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit...

JA 5.16 7C. The BOND OF PRAYER – I have a realization that I need to depend on Your Spirit through prayer moment by moment to use my armor and glorify You.

James 5:16

Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

7A. PRAYER FOR OTHERS

Ephesians 6.18b INTERCESSION

Being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints...

Having prayed as above for myself, I have also become aware of others who have specific needs for which I should now pray.

Supplement to PETITION PRINCIPLE, [see 4A2B2C "PHYSICAL"]:

SCRIPTURAL REASONS TO FAST One or More Meals Today

I feel a special need to set aside _____ hours today to pray WITH FASTING (MT 17.21). I desire for myself meekness about this as well as: thoughtfulness to others affected, my purpose to fulfill this desire, and a proper reward (MT 6.17,18) in the completion of this special period of fasting and prayer. I will furthermore fast only with wisdom, caution, proper medical understanding and personal preparation.

1. TIME OF SPIRITUAL TRAINING

DT 8.2,3; LK 4.1,2 I am being prepared by the Lord for some special spiritual service to Him.

Deut. 8:2-3

And you shall remember that the LORD your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. [3] So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD.

Luke 4:1-2

Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, [2] being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.

2. NEED OF SPECIAL HUMILITY

JL 2.12,13; PS 35.13 I feel a need to humble myself to show a special repentant spirit for God's mercy.

Joel 2:12-13

"Now, therefore," says the LORD, "Turn to Me with all your heart, With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning." [13] So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the LORD your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm.

Psalm 35:13

But as for me, when they were sick, My clothing was sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting; And my prayer would return to my own heart.

3. A CRITICAL DECISION TO MAKE

AC 14.23 I have a life-critical decision soon to make that requires special assurance of God's will.

Acts 14:23

So when they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

4. NEED OF SPIRITUAL INFLUENCE

EZ 8.21,23; ES 4.16 I have a special need to manifest the power of God for some work or project.

Ezra 8:21-23

Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river of Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from Him the right way for us and our little ones and all our possessions. [22] For I was ashamed to request of the king an escort of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy on the road, because we had spoken to the king, saying, "The hand of our God is upon all those for good who seek Him, but His power and His wrath are against all those who forsake Him." [23] So we fasted and entreated our God for this, and He answered our prayer.

Esther 4:16

"Go, gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!"

5. NEED OF SPIRITUAL INTERCESSION

DA 9.3-5 I have a special burden for the need of some one, or some thing.

Daniel 9:3-5

Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. [4] And I prayed to the LORD my God, and made confession, and said, "O Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love Him, and with those who keep His commandments, [5] we have sinned and committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments.

6. APPRECIATION

PR 27.7 I have a need to gain greater appreciation for God's gift of food.

Proverbs 27:7

A satisfied soul loathes the honeycomb, But to a hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

7. MOURNING

1 SA 31.13 I have deep sorrow over the death of a loved one.

1 Samuel 31:11-13

Now when the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, [12] all the valiant men arose and traveled all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth Shan; and they came to Jabesh and burned them there. [13]

Then they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

These are at least the 7 Main reasons to Fast. We must not overlook Jesus’ teaching regarding when NOT to fast:

8. THE TIME NOT FOR FASTING:

MR 2:18-28 During times of great joy, people are to feast and rejoice.

Mark 2:18-28

The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were fasting. Then they came and said to Him, "Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?" 19 And Jesus said to them, "Can the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. 20 "But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days. 21 "No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; or else the new piece pulls away from the old, and the tear is made worse. 22 "And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins." 23 Now it happened that He went through the grainfields on the Sabbath; and as they went His disciples began to pluck the heads of grain. 24 And the Pharisees said to Him, "Look, why do they do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?" 25 But He said to them, "Have you never read what David did when he was in need and hungry, he and those with him: 26 "how he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the showbread, which is not lawful to eat, except for the priests, and also gave some to those who were with him?" 27 And He said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. 28 "Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath."

Part I. Prayer Text Outline

In this manner, therefore, pray: Intro. Our Father in heaven, 1A. hallowed be Your name. 2A. Your kingdom come. 3A. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 4A. Give us this day our daily bread. 5A. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 6A. and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Concl. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Introduction to the prayer: Dear God, You are mine through faith in Jesus my Savior. You are my Father and I am Your son. You are in heaven and I on earth. I come to You in humility.

1A. Hallowed be Your Name May You be set apart in my life today for 1B. who You are and 2B. what You are doing and have done in my life. I acknowledge Your attributes and I am thankful for You, and Your blessings.

2A. Your kingdom come May Your rule and reign come to pass 1B. in the lives of those who do not know You, and in my life: as I 2B. pray for more laborers to reach them, as I 3B. seek to do my own business and occupy till You come, and as I 4B. eagerly anticipate Your glorious coming.

3A. Your will be done on earth . . . I pray that I would honestly yield to Your authority, and thus 1B. walk in submission to Your will by being sensitive, patient and enduring Your will as I know it today, seeking an attitude of meekness about Your will, praying for the determination to do it and finally acting in order to perform Your will for my life. I pray that 2B. each decision I make: those about 1C. My Mate and Family, 2C. My Church and School, 3C. My Ministry and Spiritual Gift, 4C. My House I dwell in, 5C. My Work and Vocation would all be made with Your will in mind. Help me see them as though I were looking from heaven.

4A. Give us this day our daily bread... I now ask that You might supply the needs I have for today. But first, I know, there are the 1B. key needs for successfully living my life today: 1C. For Spirit-control of my mind, 2C. For Death to my Sinful nature, 3C. For Balance in the Redemption of My Time, and 4C. For Meditation on the Issues of Life I ought to be focusing on today. I pray for 2B. the Elements of Life: Please give me 1C. Spiritual purity, 2C. Physical self-control, 3C. Mental/Emotionally right thoughts, 4C. Social favor in time I spend with and for others, and 5C. Financial stewardship, that I would be faithful in those trusts given to me.

5A. Forgive us our debts . . . And as I have kept short sin debts by immediate confession of sin, I reexamine my own heart for 1B. Wrong Attitudes. Lord help me to 1C. Obtain spiritual goals You expect of me, 2C. weep over sin You reveal to me, 3C. yield when I am shown sin, 4C. desire to be right in thoughts and actions, 5C. show mercy as You have shown it to me, 6C. have an undefiled conscience, 7C. love and respect others as You do, and 8C. rejoice when I am hurt or suffering for some right thing I have done. I now 2B. confess the sin You have revealed to me by 1C. agreeing with You that it was a sin, 2C. turning from it in attitude and action hereafter, and 3C. believing that You have removed this sin from me – it will is not to bring guilt on me – and that You have: 4C. forgiven me in that my relationship to You has been restored, 5C. cleansed me in that You have made me useful in Your service once again, and 6C. blessed me in that I have in truth forsaken this sin and I now have Your joy, peace and favor restored to my life.

6A. And do not lead us into . . . I know, O Lord, that I am prone to yield to temptation and to fail in trials that come, so I pray that I might resolve not to fail nor forsake You. I believe that You will give me 1B. the necessary grace to be victorious throughout life.

But deliver us from the evil one. I know that 2B. I need deliverance from evil in this world, and through armor which You have supplied, I now put each piece on: 1C. the belt of Truth– I am sure the Bible is real, it is truth, 2C. the breastplate of Righteousness– I live doing right always, 3C. the shoes of the Gospel– I share with others my faith in Christ my Savior, the Prince of Peace, 4C. the shield of Faith– I act in such a way that things I do prove I wholly trust in Your Word. 5C. the helmet of Salvation– I have unwavering assurance that I am saved, 6C. the sword of the Word of God– I take the Bible and consistently memorize passages that help me fight all evil, and 7C. the bond of Prayer– I realize that I need to depend on and thus be in a continuously prayerful spirit to use this armor successfully to fight all evil.

For Yours is the kingdom, . . . And I now confess You as the eternal Owner of All. Thank You for hearing my personal prayer.

Now I pray for others. I will also take a verse, and a song to meditate on this day.

Quotes on Courage!

Joshua 1:8-9

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. [9] Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

Discouragement

Discouragement is literally dis-courage-ment – a lack of courage. Discouragement is the antithesis of everything we have talked about. It comes as a result of building our lives on illusion instead of principle, of facing the consequences of climbing ladders against wrong walls. It comes when we're tired, out of shape, or in debt, when we have broken relationships, when we're not growing, when we have no sense of meaning or purpose in life. It comes when we have no vision, when we live with imbalance, when we fail to achieve our goals. It comes when we get lost in the urgent, limited perspective of the day, when we fail to act with integrity in the moment of choice. It comes when our thinking is competitive and scarce, when win-lose interactions fill our lives and our environment with back-biting, politicking, and comparative thinking.

Discouragement is being lost in the woods without a compass or an accurate map. It's discovering many of the maps people hand us lead us farther away from where we really want to go.

Courage

Courage, on the other hand, comes as a result of knowing there are principles, of fulfilling our needs and capacities in a balanced way, of having a clear vision, balance between roles,, the ability to set and achieve meaningful goals, the perspective to transcend the urgency of the moment, the character and competence to act with integrity in the moment of choice, the abundance mentality to function effectively and synergistically in the independent reality. Courage comes from the heart, and being in touch with the heart creates hope.

Wherever we are, the best way to develop courage is to set a goal and achieve it. No matter how small the goal or promise, this one act will begin to build our confidence that we can act with integrity in the moment of choice. It may be a matter of just getting up in the morning – putting "mind over mattress" – or of subordinating taste to nutrition, even for a day. But as we begin to make and keep promises to ourselves and others, we take the first steps on a path that leads to confidence, growth and peace.

CONCLUDING TIPS FOR USING THIS OUTLINE

Pray each Principle ONE AT A TIME From The Power of Prayer In A Believer’s Life, C.H. Spurgeon. True Prayer True Power p. 66

Theme Verse for the chapter: Mark 11:24 "Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.

Alas, for some believers who begin Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name, before they even realize the adoring Hallowed be thy name they have begun to repeat the next words: Thy kingdom come. Then perhaps something strikes their mind: Do I really wish His kingdom to come? If it were to come now, where should I be? And while they are thinking of that, their voice is going on with, Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. So they jumble up their prayers and run the sentences together.

Stop at each one until you have prayed it. Do not try to put two arrows on the string at once: they both will miss. Plead once with God and prevail, and then plead again. Get the first mercy, and then go for the second. Do not be satisfied running the colors of your prayers into one another till there is no picture to look at, but just a huge daub a smear of colors badly laid on. Look at the Lord Prayer itself. What clear, sharp outline it has. There are certain definite mercies, and they do not run into one another. There it stands as you look at the whole, it is a magnificent picture not confusion, but beautiful order. Let it be so with your prayers. Stay on one till you have prevailed with that, and then go on to the next. With definite objects and with fervent desires mixed together, there is the dawning of hope that you shall prevail with God. Charles Spurgeon
