Character Attribute #12C Truth
Review: God’s Love is> good [last time], gracious, merciful, forbearing.
The Truthfulness of God’s Character
In Relation to Prayer to Him
God is Truth.
Scripture teaching this attribute: JN 14.6 12C. Truthful (One who is
always right)
John 14: 6 Jesus said unto him, "I am the way, the truth, and the
life. No man comes to the Father, but by me."
Definition:
Truth is "conformity to fact or actuality; faithfulness to an original
or to a standard."
– Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary, P. 1075
The Bible states many facts about the truth which must be taken together to
understand what the truth is and how it is related to God Himself. Then we can
understand what it means to pray to ‘the God of Truth.’
1. The Father is truth. Of Himself He states in revelation to Moses, Exodus
34:6, And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD
God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and
truth . . . Isaiah 65.16 That he who blesseth himself in the
earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he that sweareth in
the earth shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles
are forgotten, and because they are hid from mine eyes.
2. The Father’s truth is without iniquity. Deuteronomy 32.4 He is the
Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth
and without iniquity, just and right is he.
3. The Father’s truth is related to mercy. Psalm 25.10 All the paths
of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his
testimonies. Psalm 57.3 He shall send from heaven, and save me from the
reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his
mercy and his truth. [They come or function together.] Psalm 85.10 Mercy
and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each
other. Ps 89.14 Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy
and truth shall go before thy face. Psalm 115.1 Not unto us, O
LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy
truth's sake.
4. Truth controls and guides God’s works, precepts, and judgments. Psalm
111.6-8 He hath shewed his people the power of his works, that he
may give them the heritage of the heathen. 7 The works of his hands are
verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure. They stand fast for
ever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness. Ps 119.142 Thy
righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.
Ps 96.13 Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to
judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the
people with his truth.
5. God speaks and acts in truth. 1 Sam 15.29 And also the Strength of
Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should
repent. Hebrews 6.17-18 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew
unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an
oath: 18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible
for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for
refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: James 1.18 Of his own
will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of
firstfruits of his creatures.
6. Jesus is the truth incarnate. John 1.14 And the Word was made
flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as
of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
7. Jesus spoke only the truth. John 8.40_44 But now ye seek to kill me, a
man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not
Abraham. 41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We
be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. 42 Jesus said
unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth
and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. 43 Why do
ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. 44 Ye
are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.
He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because
there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own:
for he is a liar, and the father of it.
8. The Spirit is truth. John 14.16_17 And I will pray the Father, and he
shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17
Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it
seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you,
and shall be in you.
9. God’s Word is truth. John 17.8, 17 For I have given unto them
the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have
known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst
send me. 17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Psalm 119.142 [above]; vv. 151, 160 Thou art near, O LORD; and all thy
commandments are truth. 160 Thy word is true from the beginning:
and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.
10. The Apostles and the inspired writings of the entire NT are all true.
John 19:35 nkjv And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is
true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may
believe. John 21.24 This is the disciple which testifieth of these
things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.
2 Tim 3.16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness:
Applications
A. The things I learn from God and from His Word are all true and an
accurate representation of reality. I will not be disappointed about anything
God has promised to me when life on earth is ended and eternity has begun.
- Ps 34:5 They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces
were not ashamed.
- Ps 119:80 Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I
be not ashamed.
- Ro 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for
it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to
the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
- Ro 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is
shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
- 2Co 14.7 nkjv For if in anything I have boasted to him about you, I
am not ashamed. But as we spoke all things to you in truth,
even so our boasting to Titus was found true.
- 2Ti 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless
I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am
persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him
against that day.
B. I can be absolutely assured of eternal life in Heaven because the God of
Truth has promised I will have it. 1 John 5.11 And this is the record, that
God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He
that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not
life. 13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name
of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that
ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. Therefore today, if I have
not called upon Him, I will call for eternal salvation from sin, and I will
have eternal life. (See Romans 10.13)
C. I can be truthful because the God of Truth has freed me from the lie of
the Devil. John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall
make you free.
D. In relation to prayer, I can pray knowing that God will act with truth,
that is with righteousness, in every request for prayer I make. Also I can be
encouraged that a truth-loving God hears every prayer made unto Him and He
operates within the same truthfulness which is also tempered (or strengthened)
with His graciousness, and His mercy.
