The Holiness of God’s Character
In Relation to Prayer to Him
From the Prayer Notebook
1 JN 1.5; PS 99 14C. Holy (one separate from all
other)
1 John 1:5
This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that
God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
God holiness is His separateness from all aspects
of His creation. He is [to be] set apart, especially when being worshiped.
Psalm 99:1-9 [Adoration for God’s HOLINESS]
The Lord reigns; Let the peoples tremble! He dwells between the cherubim;
Let the earth be moved!
[2] The Lord is great in Zion, And He is high above all the peoples.
[3] Let them praise Your great and awesome name– He is holy.
>[4] The King's strength also loves justice; You have established equity;
You have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.
[5] Exalt the Lord our God, And worship at His footstool– He is holy.
>[6] Moses and Aaron were among His priests, And Samuel was among those
who called upon His name; They called upon the Lord, and He answered them.
[7] He spoke to them in the cloudy pillar; They kept His testimonies and the
ordinance He gave them.
>[8] You answered them, O Lord our God You were to them God-Who-Forgives*,
Though You took vengeance on their deeds.
[9] Exalt the Lord our God, And worship at His holy hill; For the
Lord our God is holy.
*God forgiveness (vs.8) is the highest contrast to be made with His holiness.
What do we mean when we say that God is HOLY?
Definition:
"Moral and ethical wholeness or
perfection." – It is one of the attributes of God which He expects of His
creation. "Holiness may also be rendered as ‘sanctification’ or ‘godliness.’
The word holy denotes that which is ‘sanctified’ or ‘set apart’ for
divine service." – Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary.
(Continued on page 2)
It is noteworthy to see how some humans reacted in the Bible at their
personal appearance before God:
Adam was ashamed after his sin to be in God’s presence. Genesis 3.
Abraham baked cakes and rendered special treatment when he knew he was
entertaining messengers from God. [See Genesis 18]
Moses was commanded to take off his sandals when he saw God’s presence in
the burning bush. [Exodus 3.5]
Joshua was similarly commanded when he stood before the commander of the
Lord’s army. [Joshua 5.14-15]
Manoah thought he was going to die after being face to face with the angel
of the LORD. [Judges 13.22]
Samuel heard ‘ear-tingling’ judgments pronounced regarding Eli’s
house when he first realized God was speaking to him. [1 Samuel 3.11ff]
Isaiah saw Seraphims crying ‘Holy, holy, holy is the LORD God of Hosts’
and he cried out, ‘Woe is me, for I am undone’ because he saw himself
unclean and living with an unclean nation. Immediately a burning hot coal was
taken from the altar and made to touch his lips to purge iniquity and take it
away from him. Is. 6. 1-7.
Daniel, only after: 1)living a holy, set apart, life with 2) prayer three
times a day for many years and 3) faithfully serving ungodly kings and 4)
confessing his own and his nation’s sins was given a revelation of things
not even yet fulfilled. See Daniel 9.

priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew
