Character Attribute #11C, 4D Goodness

Review:

God’s Love is> gracious [last week], merciful[3wks], forbearing[2wks], and now GOOD

Romans 2:4, A Key Scripture Passage:

Ro 2:4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?

God is Good... is part of a prayer many children have memorized in youth, and is a biblical principle. In this verse it is listed along with other significant attributes of God that results in men’s salvation from Hell. But from the very beginning, God is called Good:

Ge 1:31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

NKJV

The Father’s witness to Moses:

Ex 34:6 And the LORD passed before him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth,

God’s Promise to David:

2Sa 7:28 "And now, O Lord GOD, You are God, and Your words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant. [1Ch 17:26 – repeated]

Solomon’s prayer to God when Temple was Completed:

2Ch 6:41 "Now therefore, Arise, O LORD God, to Your resting place, You and the ark of Your strength. Let Your priests, O LORD God, be clothed with salvation, And let Your saints rejoice in goodness.

David’s Confidence in the Worst Case Possible:

Ps 52:1 To the Chief Musician. A Contemplation of David when Doeg the Edomite went and told Saul, and said to him, "David has gone to the house of Ahimelech." Why do you boast in evil, O mighty man? The goodness of God endures continually. [To read the story see 1 Samuel 21:7]

As David Remembers it toward Israel:

Ps 68:10 Your congregation dwelt in it; You, O God, provided from Your goodness for the poor.

Hosea’s foretelling Israel’s acknowledging of His goodness:

Ho 3:5 Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the LORD their God and David their king. They shall fear the LORD and His goodness in the latter days.

New Testament:

Paul Clearly Teaches it as A Part of Salvation:

Ro 2:4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?

One of Two Main Ways People Come to God:

Ro 11:22 Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.

Paul Admits God’s Goodness Gives Him Pleasure:

2Th 1:11 Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power,

Romans 2:4 – John Gill’s Commentary

not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance. This is to be understood not of a spiritual and evangelical repentance, which is a free grace gift, and which none but the Spirit of God can lead, or bring persons to; but of a natural and legal repentance, which lies in an external sorrow for sin, and in an outward cessation from it, and reformation of life and manners, which the goodness of God to the Jews should have led them to; who had a large share of the good things of life, a land flowing with milk and honey, and many outward privileges which other nations had not, as the giving of the law, the covenant and promises, the word and ordinances; and repentance here chiefly designs, as it may respect the Gentiles, a change of mind and practice in them relating to idolatry and superstition. Now the providential goodness of God has a tendency to lead persons to repentance on this account; but of this end of divine goodness the Gentiles were ignorant; nor was this end answered thereby; which shows the wretched depravity of human nature; see #Ac 14:15-17.
