The Power of God’s Hallowed Name

"This is the most significant principle of prayer detailed in this famous passage, and this paper is being prepared to show why."

The sacred words of the Lord’s Prayer have been memorized by countless millions of people. They have been repeated in many ways over many days on many continents and lands. I have done the same, but I must confess that I have done so often guilty of the very thing God warned it could become: repeating it as vain repetition:

Matt 9:6 "But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. 7 "And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 "Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.

These 3 verses introduce the Lord's Prayer, and they give us three important concepts when we approach the idea of prayer:

  • 1) Prayer to God is first and foremost private. It is to be done in the secret place.
  • 2) Not doing so evidently leads to public display, and the self deception of vain repetition and "much speaking."
  • 3) Such practice reveals a basic lack of trust in God to provide (one of countless attributes and/or names of God, Jehovah jireh, Genesis 22:14), which highlights the real lesson of the Lord’s Prayer: Prayer that first includes hallowing His Name enables one to accept and do any other portion of the prayer!

Seeking His kingdom, Doing His Will, Asking for Genuine needs, forgiving offenses and confessing sins, and shunning sin and resisting temptation – all are difficult at times to do. That is the reason they are included in the prayer and meant to remembered privately every day as we live and pray.

But taking the time to set apart God: His attributes acknowledged and His works accomplished in an attitude of WORSHIP genuinely makes a revolutionary difference in our attitude and actual approach to God. And it must be done each day to continue its effectiveness. When done, our privilege to even speak with Him and be involved in a work we share with Him humbles us and the benefits of this position totally change everything about that prayer and me doing things that please God and bring His favor to all of life and a satisfaction NOTHING can substitute in its place.
